Three students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred along the Ilisan-Ago-Iwoye Road on Friday afternoon.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday, explaining that the accident happened around 3:30 pm and involved a commercial Opel Safira vehicle.
According to Odutola, the vehicle, with registration number Lagos AAA-126HE, veered off the road and flipped into the bush due to excessive speed.
“A tragic motor accident occurred on December 20, 2024, at approximately 3:30 pm on the Ilisan-Ago-Iwoye Road,” Odutola stated.
“The vehicle was driven by one Adekunkle Adebiyi of 5 Sunmibare Street, Awa Ijebu, and was traveling at high speed from Ago-Iwoye towards Ilisan when the driver lost control, leading to the crash.”
She revealed that one male passenger, believed to be an OOU student, died instantly at the scene. His body has since been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode.
Two other victims, identified as 18-year-old Dada Oluwanifesimi, a sophomore in Mass Communication, and Miracle Ogo Oluwa Daniel, 19, a junior, were rushed to Love and Care Hospital but succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.
“Unfortunately, two female students, both from Olabisi Onabanjo University, who were rushed to the hospital, could not survive their injuries,” Odutola said.
Two additional passengers, also students of the university, sustained critical injuries and are receiving treatment at the OOU Medical Centre on the Mini Campus.
“The accident vehicle has been recovered and is safely stored at the police station,” Odutola concluded, assuring the public of further updates as investigations continue.
