The Kwara State Police Command has announced a restriction on vehicular movement across all 16 Local Government Areas of the state ahead of the local government elections set for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
According to The PUNCH, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, speaking on behalf of the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Victor Olaiya, explained that the restrictions will be enforced from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day.
The measure, according to the police, is aimed at ensuring a secure and peaceful electoral process.
“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to inform the public that there will be a restriction on all vehicular movement from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024, to guarantee the smooth conduct of the local government elections,” the statement read.
Exceptions will be made for essential service providers, accredited electoral officials, authorized media personnel, electoral observers, and emergency responders. However, armed security personnel assigned to VIPs will not be allowed to escort their principals to polling units.
“We urge all residents to adhere strictly to this directive. Any individual found violating the restriction will face legal consequences,” the statement warned.
Residents were also encouraged to report any concerns or irregularities observed during the elections by contacting the police via their emergency lines.
Commissioner Olaiya reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and order during the elections, assuring that the polls will be conducted fairly and securely.
In a related development, the Customs Area Controller for Kwara, Faith Ojeifo, urged officers assigned to the elections to remain neutral and apolitical in their duties.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called for the protection and safety of journalists and observers covering the elections.
The Chairman of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, Mohammed Baba, confirmed that all necessary electoral materials have been distributed to the local government areas and assured that the state is prepared for the polls.
