Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have apprehended a suspected cult leader and armed robber, Innocent Chigozie, during a raid on a criminal hideout in Elele, Etche Local Government Area.
The police say Chigozie, 35, had been leading a gang that terrorized farmers and residents in Okahia Community, particularly along Uzo Afor Road.
Officers of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested him on January 30, 2025, following an intelligence-driven operation.
Police spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that the suspect had previously engaged officers in a gun battle but managed to escape.
“This gang had been a menace to the community, causing widespread fear among residents and farmers,” she said. “Last year, they engaged our operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat due to superior firepower.”
According to Iringe-Koko, officers recovered an automatic pump-action gun and two live cartridges from the suspect.
“The suspect confessed to owning the recovered exhibits,” she added. “He is currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing gang members and recover more weapons.”
The Rivers State Police Command assured the public of its commitment to tackling criminal activities and urged residents to report any suspicious movements to law enforcement agencies.
