The Ondo State Police Command has announced a restriction on vehicular and motorcycle movement across the state on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of measures to ensure a peaceful local government election.
In a statement released on Thursday in Akure, the state capital, the Police Commissioner, Mr. Wilfred Afolabi, through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, emphasized that the restriction was for security purposes.
The commissioner called on commuters passing through the state to adjust their travel plans in light of the directive.
“This measure is necessary to maintain public order and safeguard the electoral process,” he stated.
However, the restriction does not apply to essential service providers, including security personnel, health workers, and firefighters, who are allowed to carry out their duties without hindrance.
Mr. Afolabi also noted that cases of emergency would be considered for movement during the restriction period.
The commissioner urged eligible voters to participate peacefully in the elections. “We advise everyone to comply with the rules and conduct themselves responsibly while exercising their civic rights,” he said.
A warning was also issued to individuals intending to disrupt the election. “Let me be clear: anyone planning to cause trouble on election day should stay away. Security operatives are fully prepared to address any incidents that may arise,” the statement read.
Mr. Afolabi assured the public that adequate security arrangements had been made to protect both electoral materials and individuals during the voting process.
