Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is reportedly out of danger after sustaining stab wounds during a confrontation with an intruder at his Mumbai residence, police confirmed on Thursday.
The 54-year-old star, currently undergoing surgery, resides in the Bandra suburb of India’s financial capital with his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, and their two children.
Khan, the son of legendary cricketer Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and renowned actress Sharmila Tagore, remains one of Bollywood’s most successful and bankable actors, having appeared in over 70 films and television productions.
“He (Khan) is being treated … and is out of danger,” senior police official Gedam Dixit told Reuters.
Hospital official Niraj Uttamani, speaking earlier to ANI, stated that Khan was undergoing surgery, noting, “The extent of the damage will be understood once the surgery is complete.”
Uttamani further disclosed that a foreign object had been located near Khan’s spine, adding, “He is currently undergoing surgery.”
The attack occurred around 3:30 a.m. Representatives for Kapoor Khan assured the media that the actor was undergoing treatment while confirming that “the rest of the family is doing fine.”
Police also revealed that a female employee in the household had been injured during the incident and is receiving medical attention.
Authorities have launched an investigation and are actively searching for the assailant.
The incident has sparked widespread calls for increased security in Mumbai, especially in celebrity-dense areas.
Spokesperson for the Nationalist Congress Party, Clyde Crasto, highlighted public concerns, saying, “If such high-profile people with … security can be attacked in their homes, what could happen to common citizens?” Crasto shared this on X.
The city, under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party following the November state elections, is facing mounting pressure to bolster safety measures.
Filmmaker and actor Pooja Bhatt also voiced her concerns, emphasizing the growing unease in Bandra.
“The city, and especially the queen of the suburbs, have never felt so unsafe before,” she wrote on X.
