The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps in Kwara State has apprehended seven individuals in connection with unlawful activities during last Thursday’s protest over fuel price hikes by commercial vehicle operators in Ilorin.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Kwara State NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Michael, the suspects were arrested for their involvement in violent conduct and acts of mischief that occurred during the protest.
According to the statement, the arrested individuals are believed to be part of a group of hoodlums responsible for terrorizing residents in certain areas of the state capital.
Michael revealed that the situation escalated when hoodlums infiltrated the protest, leading to a series of thefts and public disturbances.
“On Thursday, September 5, 2024, one Olusegun Taiwo (F) from the Sango area of Ilorin reported an incident of criminal conspiracy and theft.
She explained that while commuting to her workplace on a motorcycle, she was attacked by a group of young men who forcibly took her bag, phones, and other personal belongings,” the statement read.
The NSCDC operatives swiftly acted on the report, leading to the arrest of the suspects, who were found to be part of the same group that disrupted public peace.
“The suspects were apprehended for engaging in criminal activities during a protest by commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators in Ilorin,” Michael added.
NSCDC Kwara State Commandant, Umar Mohammed, reassured residents that the Command is committed to maintaining law and order across the state.
“We will not hesitate to take decisive action against any individual or group involved in criminal activities that threaten the peace and security of Kwara State,” he said.
The statement concluded by noting that the arrested suspects would be prosecuted according to the law.
