MultiChoice Nigeria has unveiled a 72-hour complimentary access to all DStv channels, beginning Friday, December 27, 2024.
The pay-TV provider, which recently experienced a significant decline in its subscriber base, stated that disconnected customers can also enjoy the seasonal offer.
In a statement released on Thursday, MultiChoice emphasized that the offer is exclusive to DStv subscribers and will not extend to GOtv customers.
Billed as a “gift like no other,” the company revealed that all DStv packages will be upgraded to Premium access during the period, allowing subscribers to explore a wide range of content without any additional costs.
“As we wind down the year and celebrate the holidays, DStv is happy to announce that we are making this December one to remember.
“From Friday, Dec. 27, to Sunday, Dec. 29, we’re giving all DStv customers, connected and disconnected, regardless of their current package, access to every channel and every show at no extra cost.
“Whatever package you’re on, connected or not, this is your chance to unlock the full power of DStv Premium and revel in a world of endless entertainment and authenticity.
“For 72 hours, the only thing standing between you and the best in sports, kids’ programming, movies, and local dramas is your decoder. No payments or calls required,” the statement read
Addressing Subscriber Loss
The generous offer comes at a time when MultiChoice is grappling with subscriber losses.
The company’s interim financial results for the six months ending September 30, 2024, reported a loss of 243,000 Nigerian subscribers between April and September.
MultiChoice attributes the drop to the country’s soaring inflation, which exceeds 30%, driven by the rising costs of food, fuel, and electricity.
These financial pressures have led many customers to abandon their decoders.
Earlier in 2024, the South African-based company disclosed an 18% drop in its Nigerian subscriber base in its annual financial report for the year ending March 2024.
MultiChoice Group CEO, Calvo Mawela, noted that the company is navigating challenges in the global pay-TV landscape, including the rise of streaming platforms, shifting consumer habits, and the growing influence of social media.
Price Hikes and Legal Disputes
The free access initiative also comes against the backdrop of recent price increases.
MultiChoice Nigeria adjusted its DStv and GOtv subscription fees three times within 12 months—first in April 2023, followed by another hike in November, and a third adjustment in April 2024, which took effect on May 1.
Ahead of the May 1 increase, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja issued an injunction to halt the price hike, following a complaint by a Nigerian subscriber.
However, MultiChoice proceeded with the implementation, defying the court order.
In response, the Tribunal imposed a N150 million fine on the company in June and mandated a one-month free subscription for all DStv and GOtv users.
The 72-hour free viewing window may serve as a gesture to re-engage customers and bolster subscriber retention during the holiday season.
