A 31-year-old man, Sunday Jimoh, tragically lost his life after drowning in a well while attempting to retrieve a phone in Oja-Odan, Ogun State, on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola.
According to Odutola, the unfortunate event was reported by Kabiru Aladeshayi Ayigbere, a resident of the Junction Area in Oja-Odan, who stated that he saw Jimoh trying to enter the well located beside his shop.
“Jimoh was determined to retrieve a phone that had accidentally fallen into the well, despite being cautioned against the risk,” Odutola said.
She further explained, “Regrettably, while Aladeshayi was away, Jimoh proceeded to enter the well and tragically drowned.”
Upon receiving the report, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, and rescue teams were called in to recover the body. A preliminary investigation revealed no foul play, confirming that it was a tragic accident.
“The family of the deceased has been informed, and they have requested to bury him in line with Muslim traditions,” Odutola stated.
The Ogun State Police Command extended its sympathies to Jimoh’s family and urged the public to exercise caution in similar situations.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We also advise the public to avoid dangerous actions that could lead to tragic outcomes,” Odutola added.
