A tragic fire accident claimed the lives of four people and left ten others injured after a Hummer bus caught fire in Gwaram, Jigawa State, on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
The incident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. near Government Girls Unity Secondary School, involved a bus travelling from Zaki Local Government Area in Bauchi State to Rabadi village in Gwaram Local Government Area.
Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson, SP Lawan Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday.
“The vehicle was carrying 44 passengers, including 25 adults and 19 children,” Adam disclosed.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire started when a mattress tied to the back of the vehicle came into contact with the exhaust, igniting flames that rapidly spread through the bus.
“The victims have been identified as Zuwairah Hassan, 40; Fatima Hassan, 5; Iyatale Hassan, 3; and Halima Muhammad, 10. They were all from Saldiga village in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi State,” Adam added.
Emergency responders transported ten injured passengers to Gwaram Cottage Hospital for medical treatment, while the remaining occupants were safely evacuated. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families following a medical examination.
The police have called on commercial drivers to prioritize passenger safety by avoiding overloading and ensuring regular vehicle maintenance.
“We urge all drivers to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations to prevent such unfortunate incidents,” Adam stated.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire and any possible negligence.
