A Urologist at the Department of Surgery, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, was kidnapped by gunmen on Tuesday evening.
According to The PUNCH, the abduction occurred at the entrance of Dr. Onuigbo’s residence in Nnewi as he returned home from work. Witnesses reported that the attackers intercepted him, forced him into their vehicle, and sped off.
A source close to the incident described the scene, saying, “He was stopped by some armed men just as he was about to enter his residence. After a brief conversation, they compelled him to get into their car and drove away. As of now, the kidnappers have not contacted the family, but efforts are already underway to secure his release.”
An official of the teaching hospital, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, adding, “The institution is aware of what happened and necessary actions are being taken. That’s all I can say for now.”
The Anambra State Police Command has also confirmed the abduction. The Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, assured the public that efforts to rescue the doctor were in motion.
“We are aware of the situation and have commenced rescue operations,” Ikenga said. “The Commissioner of Police, CP Obono Itam, has directed immediate action, and our officers are fully engaged in tracking down the culprits.”
