FBI Director Christopher Wray has announced his intention to step down at the end of President Joe Biden’s administration, with his resignation coinciding with the transition of power to President-elect Donald Trump in January 2025.
According to AFP, Wray expressed his gratitude to the agency’s workforce and outlined his reasons for leaving after seven years at the helm.
A short clip from the event was shared on the FBI’s X (formerly Twitter) account, while the full speech was published on the agency’s website.
“Since the moment I started this job, my focus has been on what’s best for our institution—for the Bureau and the American people we serve,” Wray stated. “This decision, while not easy, is about safeguarding the Bureau’s future.”
Wray’s tenure as director spanned a challenging period marked by rising cyber threats, the opioid epidemic, and increasing geopolitical tensions.
Reflecting on these challenges, he commended the FBI’s efforts in combating violent crime, thwarting terrorism, and addressing emerging dangers such as artificial intelligence misuse by adversaries.
“These challenges are formidable and growing,” he said, emphasizing the importance of adapting to new and evolving threats. He also highlighted a recent successful operation that disrupted a potential mass casualty attack.
Wray praised the agency’s 38,000 employees, calling them the “bedrock” of the FBI’s success. “Our strength lies in each other,” he said. “We’re not on any one side. We’re on the American people’s side—the Constitution’s side.”
In his address, Wray underscored the FBI’s commitment to integrity and independence, emphasizing the need to remain steadfast against external pressures. “Doing the right thing, the right way—every time—has been, and will remain, the foundation of this institution,” he said.
As the FBI prepares for a change in leadership, Wray encouraged the Bureau’s personnel to continue their work with the same dedication and resilience. “Our work is never done,” he concluded, “but it’s noble work. And together, you will continue to uphold it.”
