The Zamfara State Government has filed a criminal case against eight suspended state lawmakers, accusing them of unlawfully breaking into offices at the State House of Assembly.
The lawmakers allegedly searched for a mace to facilitate an unlawful plenary sitting. The case was presented before Chief Magistrate Rukubatu Aliyu Kanoma.
The State Attorney General’s representative stated that on February 22, 2024, the accused forcefully entered the office of the Sergeant-at-Arms and the Clerk to the House of Assembly, taking valuable items and a mace.
The accused lawmakers are Hon. Shamsudeen Hassan, Hon. Faruk Musa Dosara, Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi, Hon. Bashir Aliyu Gummi, Hon. Basiru Bello Bungudu, Hon. Amiru Ahmad Keta, Hon. Ibrahim T. Tukur, and Hon. Bashiru Abubakar.
The charge against them is based on sections 122 (A) and 123(1) (C) of the Zamfara State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2023.
The Attorney General requested a warrant of arrest or criminal summons against the defendants.
However, the defendants’ counsels argued that the court lacked jurisdiction.
The case is adjourned to May 30, 2024, for the court to decide on its jurisdiction.
