Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, describing the situation as both disheartening and alarming.
In a statement shared on Thursday via his X account, Obi lamented recent attacks on lives, businesses, and infrastructure, highlighting the profound impact on the nation’s economy and citizens’ well-being.
Obi specifically condemned two tragic incidents that occurred this week. In Benue State, terrorists attacked communities in two local government areas, leaving around 30 people dead.
Meanwhile, in Nnewi, Anambra State, a motorcycle showroom belonging to Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing was targeted, resulting in the abduction of three staff members.
“Just a few days ago, I read a harrowing report about the killing of about 30 persons by terrorists in separate attacks on communities in two Local Government Areas of Benue State,” Obi said.
“Yesterday, I was shocked by the reports of the unfortunate terror attack on the motorcycle showroom of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing in Nnewi, Anambra State, where about three members of the staff were also kidnapped.”
Obi questioned the country’s trajectory in the face of growing insecurity, stating, “Where are we headed as a nation with this level of insecurity?”
He noted that the persistent attacks not only claim lives but also discourage local and foreign investors, further exacerbating the nation’s economic woes.
“It is even more worrisome and discouraging that, in the face of the severe economic hardship facing our nation, our productive business facilities are attacked,” he said.
The former governor called for swift and decisive action to address the crisis, warning against the continued loss of lives and the collapse of essential infrastructure.
“We must not continue to allow this mindless waste of human lives and attack on our businesses and critical infrastructure across the country. We must end this monster of insecurity before we are all consumed,” Obi emphasized.
He extended his condolences to the victims of the Benue attacks and sympathized with the founder of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, Innocent Chukwuma, over the assault on his business.
He also urged security forces to prioritize the rescue of the abducted workers.
“I urge the security agents to do their best in rescuing the kidnapped workers. Again, we must end insecurity in our nation before it ends us,” he concluded.
