Danny Welbeck’s late heroics secured Brighton & Hove Albion’s place in the FA Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 42 years, as they edged past Newcastle United 2-1 after extra time on Sunday.
The intense clash saw both teams reduced to 10 men before Welbeck delivered the decisive moment in the 114th minute with a sublime finish from a tight angle.
Newcastle struck first in the 22nd minute when Alexander Isak confidently dispatched a penalty into the far corner, following a foul by Yankubah Minteh on Tino Livramento.
However, Minteh redeemed himself just before halftime, latching onto a well-placed pass from Joao Pedro to level the score in the 44th minute.
Tensions flared late in normal time, resulting in red cards for Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey
With the game stretching into extra time, Welbeck emerged as the match-winner, sealing a dramatic victory and Brighton’s historic progression in the competition.
