A middle-aged woman, identified as Ifeoma Abisi, has been arrested by a local vigilante group in the Ajaji Layout area of Asaba, Delta State, for allegedly breaking into a shop.
The Vigilante Chairman, Francis Okolo, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that Abisi was caught in the early hours of the day.
During interrogation, Abisi admitted to the crime, explaining that a young man had initially taken her from her home with a promise of ₦6,000 to stay until morning. However, he later sent her away.
She recounted, “To help myself, I lay in front of a shop along Ibori Brother Street at Oduke in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State and ended up breaking into the shop through the ceiling to bring something home for the children to eat.”
She further confessed, “Because I was unfamiliar with the area, I was caught by the vigilante while heading to the market to sell the stolen items. This is my third time engaging in this act.”
Okolo disclosed that while pleading for mercy, Abisi admitted to selling stolen items on three occasions to a woman named Ada, who resides in the Oko area of Asaba.
He urged his team to stay alert and intensify efforts in tracking criminal activities.
Items recovered from the suspect included a standing fan, a cooking gas cylinder, and a complete studio light.
Okolo also stated that Abisi had been handed over to a DSS officer, who assured that she would be transferred to the police for further investigation.
