A 14-year-old boy, identified as Harris Wolobah from Massachusetts, has died after taking part in a viral trend.
Officials reported that Wolobah passed away on Friday after experiencing what his family believes to be “complications” related to the “one chip challenge,” however the results of a post-mortem are still pending.
Officials withheld additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and did not provide any confirmation of the cause of death.
One of the spiciest tortilla chips in the world is consumed as part of the one chip challenge, which is quite popular on social media.
Participants must then endure the heat for as long as they can before eating or drinking something to ease their discomfort.
According to its website, the chip from the US company Paqui is created from the Carolina Reaper and Scorpion, two of the world’s spiciest chilli peppers.
Harris’s mother, Lois Walobah, told NBC10 Boston that she was sent to the school on Friday by a nurse after her son informed him that a classmate had given him the chip, which had given him a severe stomach ache.
They returned home, but later that day, she claimed, his brother yelled that Harris had collapsed.
He was brought to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to Ms. Wolobah, her son ought to have been sent to a medical facility rather than being discharged to his residence subsequent to his visit to the nurse’s office. She expresses a desire to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with the consumption of chips in order to avert future unfortunate incidents.
