Mateo Retegui expressed his delight at scoring twice in Atalanta’s commanding 6-1 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The forward also praised his team’s “quality and experience,” which he believes were key to the emphatic win.
Retegui’s brace was a highlight of the evening, with UEFA awarding one of the goals initially credited to Charles De Ketelaere to Retegui, as the ball was deflected in off him. Sead Kolasinac and Lazar Samardzic also added their names to the score sheet.
“I’m very happy, as we all played really well, especially in the first half. We came here with the mentality to win, take all three points, and now we can rest a little before the next match,” Retegui told Sky Sport Italia after the match.
He continued, “We have a team with so much quality and experience, we are playing beautiful football and it shows. I dedicate this award to the whole team, because we are doing so well both in Serie A and Europe. We must continue keeping our feet on the ground, trying to keep winning and going like this.”
Retegui acknowledged the importance of the victory, stating, “We know it was very important to win today.”
Atalanta remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season, with the goal conceded against Young Boys marking the first they have allowed in European competition.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side is currently in fourth place with three wins and two draws, though their position could still shift depending on Wednesday’s results.
