Investigators have determined that a Steam account, initially thought to be linked to the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, is fake, according to a US official briefed on the matter
According to CNN earlier on Thursday, a source familiar with the situation stated Thomas Matthews Crooks had posted, “July 13 will be my premiere, watch as it unfolds.” This source did not provide further details regarding the timing or any additional posts.
The FBI had informed senators on Wednesday that they believed the account belonged to Crooks, a source familiar with the briefing said.
However, the bureau has now revised that assessment, the US official confirmed.
Officials emphasize that the investigation is still in its early stages and no motive has been identified yet.
Investigators are working to understand Crooks’ activities in the days and hours leading up to his attempt on the former president’s life.
Crooks visited the Trump rally site twice, had images of both Trump and President Joe Biden on his cell phone, and his search history included dates for the Democratic National Convention and upcoming Trump events, three US officials revealed this.
Despite combing through Crooks’ physical and digital activities, investigators have not found a clear motive for why the 20-year-old ascended a roof in Butler, Pennsylvania, with an AR-style weapon.
Crooks had also searched online about major depression disorder, as reported by administration officials to Congress during briefings on Wednesday.
