President Bola Tinubu on Monday traveled to Maiduguri, Borno State, following devastating floods that have submerged 70% of the city.
The disaster, triggered by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has displaced thousands of residents and caused widespread damage.
The President’s visit comes shortly after his return from China, as the Federal Government moved swiftly to establish Internally Displaced Persons camps to provide shelter for affected residents.
In addition to the displacement of people, the floods have severely impacted the local wildlife, with 80% of the animals at Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo reported to have died, marking Borno State’s worst flooding event in three decades.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Correctional Service has launched efforts to recapture inmates after a jailbreak occurred amid the chaos, with three inmates apprehended and 281 still missing.
The Federal Government is continuing its response to the crisis, focusing on relief efforts and addressing the immediate needs of those displaced by the floods.
