President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the prominent Yoruba leader and elder statesman, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
The respected nationalist died peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos, as confirmed by his family.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Tinubu paid tribute to Adebanjo’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape and his unwavering commitment to justice and democracy.
He described Adebanjo as “a fearless advocate for truth, justice, and democracy” whose voice shaped decades of political discourse.
“Baba Adebanjo’s principled voice will be deeply missed,” President Tinubu remarked.
“His regular interventions in national affairs enriched our political discourse. His legacy of standing firm for good governance and democracy will forever be etched in the fabric of this country.”
Acknowledging Adebanjo as one of the last surviving nationalists, Tinubu reflected on his role in shaping the nation’s history.
“From his early days as the Organising Secretary of the Action Group to his leadership in the Unity Party of Nigeria, Adebanjo remained steadfast in his pursuit of democratic ideals,” he said.
The President highlighted Adebanjo’s pivotal role during the fight to restore democracy in Nigeria, especially following the annulment of the 12 June 1993 presidential election.
Tinubu commended his courage during the military dictatorship, noting that Adebanjo’s involvement in the National Democratic Coalition contributed to the eventual restoration of democracy.
“Baba’s courage shone brightest during moments of national crisis,” Tinubu stated. “His leadership in NADECO helped galvanize a movement that was crucial to our collective struggle for democratic governance.”
Reflecting on their personal bond, Tinubu added, “I shared a deep personal bond with Baba Adebanjo; he was like a father figure to me. While our political paths diverged over the years, my respect and admiration for him never wavered.”
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Adebanjo’s family, Afenifere leadership, governors of the Southwest, and all Nigerians who aligned with the late leader’s vision for a united and prosperous nation.
“Let us take solace in the enduring legacy of a man who devoted his life to the service of others,” Tinubu concluded. “His legacy will inspire future generations. May his soul rest in peace.”
Arrangements for Adebanjo’s burial will be announced by his family in the coming days.
