President Bola Tinubu has praised Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The team secured their spot by defeating Canada 79-70 in their final Group B match at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in France.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu commended the team for their “resilience, teamwork, and diligence.”
He also applauded the efforts of the coach and management, urging the team to maintain their focus until they achieve ultimate victory.
The president expressed his continued support for D’Tigress and the entire Nigerian contingent at the Olympics, emphasizing the pride they bring to the nation on the global stage.
Sports Minister John Enoh also extended his congratulations, highlighting the significance of D’Tigress’ victory over Canada.
In a tweet, Enoh celebrated the team’s achievement of becoming the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarterfinals. He praised their skill and determination, noting their wins against higher-ranked teams.
Additionally, Enoh commended Favour Ofili for her impressive performance in the women’s 200-meter event, where she qualified for the semi-finals with a season-best time of 22.24 seconds.
Enoh lauded Ofili’s perseverance and talent, encouraging her to continue striving for gold.
