President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow following a fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, which claimed over 80 lives and left many others injured.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday when the tanker overturned, leading to an explosion as individuals attempted to scoop Premium Motor Spirit from the scene.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the government of Niger State.
“This is a devastating and preventable tragedy,” President Tinubu said. “It is heartbreaking that so many lives were lost, especially under such avoidable circumstances. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and all those affected by this unfortunate event.”
The President has directed that comprehensive medical care be provided to those injured in the explosion.
He also instructed security and road safety agencies to strengthen measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Highlighting the dangers of approaching accident scenes involving fuel-laden vehicles, the President urged citizens to exercise caution.
“I strongly advise all Nigerians to stay away from accident sites, especially those involving fuel tankers, due to the high risk of explosion,” he said.
To prevent future occurrences, President Tinubu has tasked the National Orientation Agency with launching a nationwide awareness campaign.
