Juan Pablo Vigon’s 84th-minute goal secured a 2-1 victory for Tigres over defending champions Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup group stage.
The triumph came in a match held in Houston, where Tigres, an eight-time Liga MX champion, clinched the group title.
Vigon, a 33-year-old Mexican midfielder, delivered the decisive goal that saw Tigres finish top in their group.
The Leagues Cup features a World Cup-style format, where MLS and Liga MX teams are divided into three-team groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout stages.
Inter Miami, without their star player Lionel Messi, who is sidelined with a right ankle ligament injury sustained during Argentina’s Copa America final win over Colombia, had to settle for second place in the group.
This result could set up a potential first-round knockout match against Pachuca, the reigning CONCACAF Champions Cup champions.
The match saw Tigres take the lead in the 36th minute with a goal from Argentine striker Juan Brunetta.
Miami managed to equalize in the 74th minute through Ecuadoran forward Leo Campana, but Vigon’s late strike ensured Tigres’ victory.
