The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of three individuals following a violent clash between farmers and herders in the Dogon Duste community, located between Nasarawa and Toto Local Government Areas.
Addressing journalists on Thursday in Lafia, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, provided details of the tragic incident.
Nadada explained that the clash occurred on Monday around 4:30 p.m.
“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) received a report that there was a clash between farmers and herders on Monday, at about 4:30 pm. On reaching there, it was discovered that two people were killed in the farm while four others injured were rushed to a Primary Healthcare for treatment,” he disclosed.
A subsequent search operation by the police revealed a third body in the nearby bush, increasing the total number of fatalities to three.
Nadada assured residents that calm had been restored to the community and emphasized the commitment of the police to unearthing the root cause of the conflict.
“We are working closely with the community to apprehend those responsible for the incident and ensure that they face the law,” he stated.
The commissioner urged residents to continue their cooperation with security agencies, describing community collaboration as essential for lasting peace.
“The protection of life and property is a collective responsibility. Hence, the need for all residents to rally around the command to tackle security challenges,” he said.
Highlighting efforts to sustain peace, Nadada elaborated on a new action plan designed to combat crime.
“We have already developed an action plan that revolves around collaborative policing after a careful study of the trend of the crime pattern in the state,” he explained.
He also noted that significant strides had been made in reducing insecurity through community-police collaboration and support from the state government.
“The state is adjudged to be one of the most peaceful in the country because of the collaborative strategy with the communities, and the support from the state government,” Nadada concluded.
As investigations into the clash continue, residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
The Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens, underscoring that community support remains a key pillar in achieving a secure environment.
