A fatal auto crash on the Itu-Uyo road in Akwa Ibom State on Saturday has left three individuals dead and one person injured.
The incident involved a Mack Truck with the registration number KMM412XA and a Tricycle (Keke) registered as ETN815WR
According to a statement by the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, it operatives swiftly responded to the incident, moving the injured individual to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a morgue.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Paul James, attributed the cause of the accident to a combination of factors.
He stated that the crash was a result of the tricyclist’s excessive speed and the inadequacy of lighting systems on both vehicles, which hampered clear visibility.
The statement reads, “A fatal crash occurred today, Saturday 21st October, 2023 along Itu – Uyo road at about 0555hrs, involving a Mack Truck with registration number KMM412XA and a Tricycle (Keke) with registration number ETN815WR. Three females and one male, all adults, were involved, and two out of the three females and one male were confirmed dead, while one of the females sustained injuries.”
The Sector Commander for Akwa Ibom State, Matthew Olonisaye, expressed his concern over the tragic event and emphasized the need for extreme caution on the road, particularly during foggy weather conditions in the early morning hours when visibility is poor.
He also pointed out that this accident could have been prevented if safety precautions had been followed and if road users had adhered to traffic rules and regulations.
