The Transmission Company of Nigeria has refuted claims of a nationwide grid collapse, clarifying that a power disruption earlier today was limited to the Lagos region.
In a statement issued by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs, TCN confirmed that the incident occurred at about 1:41 p.m. when the Osogbo-Ihovbor transmission line tripped, subsequently causing the Benin-Omotosho line to trip as well.
“This affected bulk electricity supply to the Lagos axis alone,” Mbah explained, emphasizing that the event did not constitute a grid collapse.
According to TCN, the total power generation on the grid before the tripping was 4,335.63 megawatts. Following the disruption, generation dropped to 2,573.23 megawatts. “This clearly shows that the grid remained operational,” Mbah stated.
The transmission line tripping disrupted operations at power stations, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras.
However, TCN assured the public that power has been restored to all affected stations except the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is still undergoing restoration.
While reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the national transmission grid despite existing challenges, TCN urged the public and media outlets to avoid spreading unverified information.
“It is imperative that we understand the negative impact of deliberately misinforming the public and the value of disseminating true and verifiable facts,” Mbah concluded.
