The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Taraba State University chapter, has called off its strike, which began on December 5, 2024.
This decision was announced on Saturday through a statement issued in Jalingo by the union’s Chairperson, Dr. Garba Joshua.
The industrial action, according to the statement, was a response to the partial implementation of agreements by the Taraba State Government, including issues such as university funding, payment of Earned Academic Allowances, staff pensions, gratuities, unpaid salaries, the formation of a governing council, and adjustments to the minimum wage.
Dr. Joshua commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his role in resolving the crisis, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, the university’s management, and the general public in facilitating the resolution.
“The government has committed to addressing the underlying issues, including improving funding in line with Taraba State Law No. 4 of 2008 and initiating the payment of 10% of Earned Academic Allowance arrears, with 5% to be paid monthly from February 2025,” Dr. Joshua stated.
He also expressed optimism about the implementation of a state pension scheme and a strategy to clear outstanding salary arrears.
“Adjustments will ensure the governing council complies with statutory requirements, and the new wage structure has already been implemented, alongside commitments to regular salary payments,” he added.
Dr. Joshua further affirmed the union’s dedication to fostering a conducive academic environment.
“Our chapter has resolved to suspend the strike immediately with the approval of ASUU National. This decision was made in consideration of the positive steps taken by the government and the unwavering support of our Congress, Zonal leadership, and ASUU National.”
With the suspension, the second-semester examinations, which were disrupted by the industrial action, are set to resume in the coming days.
