A member of the Onelga Security Planning Advisory Committee a local security outfit in Rivers State, has been shot dead by suspected cultists in the Igwuruta community of Ikwerre Local Government Area.
According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred on Wednesday night when the vigilante group responded to a distress call about a kidnapping in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen ambushed the OSPAC members, opening fire and killing one of them, identified as Prince.
The assailants fled the scene immediately, causing panic among residents who scrambled for safety
“From what we heard the OSPAC people rushed to where they said there was a kidnapping going on. So immediately they arrived at the place, some gunmen opened fire and one of their men was shot dead. That is all I can say.”
The body of the deceased had been evacuated and taken to an undisclosed mortuary.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident.
“Investigation is ongoing to ascertain what happened and to ensure the culprits are apprehended and prosecuted,” she stated
