The Confederation of African Football has initiated an investigation following troubling incidents involving the Nigerian Super Eagles at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 14, CAF’s communications department condemned the circumstances under which the Nigerian national football team and their coaching staff were held for several hours.
The team was allegedly directed to land at the airport by Libyan authorities.
“CAF has been in contact with both Libyan and Nigerian officials regarding the incident involving the Super Eagles,” the statement noted. “They were reportedly stranded under disturbing conditions for over 14 hours before eventually being allowed to leave Libya.”
The situation has raised serious concerns, leading CAF to refer the case to its Disciplinary Board for a thorough investigation. The organization pledged to take appropriate measures against those found responsible for violating CAF’s statutes and regulations.
“We will ensure that necessary actions are taken to address this incident,” the statement continued. “CAF is committed to upholding the integrity and welfare of all teams participating in its competitions.”
After the prolonged ordeal, the Super Eagles have now been permitted to exit Libya.
