Activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his arraignment over social media remarks in which he referred to Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as an “illegal IG.”
According to The PUNCH, Sowore is facing a three-count charge under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, recently amended in 2024.
The charges, filed under suit number FCH/ABJ/23/25, accuse him of deliberately posting messages via his verified Twitter account that allegedly aimed to incite unrest and undermine police authority.
The police claim that his statements were false and capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.
His legal team, led by Marshall Abubakar, confirmed that the case is now before Justice Liman. “We are prepared to challenge these charges, which we believe lack merit,” Abubakar said.
Political activist Deji Adeyanju also condemned the case, describing it as “an abuse of legal process.” He pledged a strong legal defense, stating, “This is another attempt to suppress dissent and silence government critics.”
Sowore was arrested on Monday after reportedly rejecting bail conditions set by the police.
His legal troubles come amid ongoing tensions with authorities, particularly following a viral video he posted in December alleging police extortion at a checkpoint in Lagos.
