Lawmakers from the six South-West states, under the banner of the South-West Legislative Reform Implementation Committee, have urged for increased support for the South-West Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, in order to enhance safety across the region.
They also cautioned stakeholders against perceiving Amotekun as a political tool manipulated by regional politicians.
According to The PUNCH, these calls were part of a communiqué issued after the SLRIC meeting, which took place in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Saturday.
The document was released by Mr. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, the Majority Leader of the Ondo State House of Assembly, on Sunday.
The meeting brought together majority leaders from the region’s Houses of Assembly to deliberate on pressing issues affecting legislative processes, regional security, and economic development.
According to the communiqué, a major focus of the meeting was the harmonization of legislative standing orders across the South-West.
The aim of this reform is to synchronize procedures across all six Houses of Assembly in the region, ultimately facilitating smoother governance and enhancing legislative efficiency.
Part of the communiqué stated, “The SLRIC meeting focused on several key areas, notably the harmonization of standing orders across the South-West region. This critical reform aims to streamline legislative procedures and ensure that all Houses of Assembly in the South-West are aligned, fostering seamless governance and legislative efficiency.”
Security was another critical subject of discussion. Lawmakers expressed concerns over the current state of security in the region and stressed the importance of reinforcing the security structure, particularly through the Amotekun Corps.
The legislators proposed strategies to improve the safety framework of the South-West and called for quick implementation of the formulated plans.
“One of the significant topics of discussion was the state of security in the region. We emphasized the urgent need to strengthen the security architecture across the South-West. Our discussions have led to the formulation of strategies to bolster our region’s security. Our collective responsibility is to ensure that these plans are swiftly and effectively implemented,” the communiqué further outlined.
Additionally, the lawmakers encouraged regional governments to develop policies and create partnerships that would attract investments and spur economic development.
They emphasized that the future of the South-West lies not only in securing the region but also in unlocking its immense economic potential.
“The future of the South-West is not just in security and governance, but in unlocking the vast economic potential of our region. Let us work towards creating an environment where businesses can thrive, providing jobs and prosperity for our people,” the group urged.
The SLRIC underscored that the combined efforts of governance, security, and economic growth would lead to sustained development in the South-West, benefiting its citizens both in terms of safety and prosperity.
