Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has unveiled plans to expand the state’s annual Ramadan feeding programme, ensuring that more vulnerable residents benefit from the initiative.
According to The PUNCH, the governor made this announcement during the inauguration of the remodelled Ruggar Wauru Jumu’at Mosque in Sokoto.
Aliyu emphasized his administration’s commitment to early preparations for the 2025 Ramadan season, with a focus on improving the quality and reach of the feeding programme.
“We are working ahead of the forthcoming Ramadan fast to improve the quality of food served at our feeding centres. We are also determined to expand these centres to reach more of the needy, the vulnerable, and the less privileged in our society,” he stated.
He further explained that the initiative would be extended to areas previously without feeding centres, ensuring wider access for those in need.
The governor also highlighted ongoing efforts to promote Islamic affairs in the state, including the construction and renovation of mosques and Islamiyya schools.
“We have completed the renovation of several Jumu’at mosques, including Sheikh Musa Lukuwa, Tahsinul Qur’an, Runjin Sambo, Sheikh Gumi Sultan Maccido Emir Yahaya Road, as well as mosques in Yabo and Gwadabawa,” Aliyu said.
He added that additional renovations were ongoing in Kebbe, Illela, Shagari, and Kware, reaffirming the state’s dedication to providing worshippers with comfortable prayer spaces.
In line with these efforts, the government has allocated a monthly imprest ranging from N300,000 to N500,000 for the maintenance of 90 Jumu’at mosques in Sokoto metropolis.
Furthermore, allowances have been introduced for Imams, Deputy Imams, and Muazzins in recognition of their contributions to religious teachings and spiritual guidance.
Aliyu also addressed the reactivation of the Hisbah Board, which is responsible for promoting moral discipline and combating social vices in the state.
He assured the public that Hisbah operates independently without government interference, with his administration committed to supporting its mandate.
The event featured remarks from the State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr. Jabir Sani Mai Hulla, as well as representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto and the Emir of Argungu, Ismaila Muhammad Mera. They all commended the governor’s initiatives, describing them as transformative for the state’s religious and social development.
