Super Falcons striker, Gift Monday, has been recognized for her outstanding performances in the Spanish women’s topflight, clinching the Player of the Month award for February.
The Tenerife forward edged out stiff competition from notable names such as Real Madrid’s Alba Redondo, Barcelona’s Caroline Hansen, Ainhoa Marin of Deportivo, Ane Azkona from Bilbao, Granada’s Ari Mingueza, and Elba Verges of Eibar.
At 23, Monday becomes the first Nigerian to win the prestigious award since Rasheedat Ajibade, who claimed the inaugural edition last September.
She received the accolade during a training session with her club, celebrated by her teammates on Monday.
“This is how Gift Monday received the trophy for the best player of the month of February. In recognition of her incredible performance, she becomes the PLAYER OF THE MONTH for EA Sports FC,” Liga F announced via X on Monday.
Monday has been a key player for Tenerife, propelling them to sixth in the league standings with 10 goals in 18 matches.
Her goal tally places her third in the league’s scoring charts, trailing Barcelona’s Ewa Pajor by five goals and sitting two behind second-place Edna Imade.
Now in her third season in Europe, Monday has hit new heights, making this her best campaign so far. Before a recent two-game goal drought, she had impressively found the net in six consecutive matches.
Reflecting on her progress, the Super Falcons star expressed confidence in her development, “Right now, I feel like one of the best players in the world because having to compete with some exceptional players from bigger clubs, I feel like I’m getting there gradually and I’m liking the process.”
Since joining Tenerife in 2022 from FC Robo on a three-year deal, Monday has continued to make strides in her career. She recently extended her stay at the club until 2027, solidifying her place as a key figure in the squad.
