The Nigerian Senate has unanimously expressed confidence in its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, during Thursday’s plenary session.
According to The PUNCH, the resolution followed a motion put forward by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader, Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West).
The move comes just two days after the suspended Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), spoke at the Inter-Parliamentary Union gathering in New York, where she alleged that her suspension stemmed from raising accusations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has since initiated contempt proceedings against Akpabio and other Senate leaders over what she described as an unfair six-month suspension without pay.
Despite the allegations, the Senate has called on Nigerians to remain focused on governance, stressing that the issue is already before the court.
“The matter is sub judice, and as a law-abiding institution, we cannot interfere in a case currently under judicial review,” a senator stated while citing Order 40 of the Senate’s standing rules.
