The Nigerian Senate has called for an inquiry into the frequent flight delays and cancellations plaguing the country’s aviation sector.
This directive came during Wednesday’s plenary session following a motion moved by Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North).
The motion, which highlighted the growing frustration among air travelers, urged the Senate Committee on Aviation to investigate the issue and recommend lasting solutions.
Describing the situation as “worrisome,” Senator Buhari stated, “Air travel is considered one of the most reliable and efficient modes of transportation, particularly for business and time-sensitive engagements.
“However, the incessant delays and cancellations are becoming a significant hindrance to socio-economic development.”
The Senate summoned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Chris Najomo, airline operators, and other stakeholders to address the issue.
Senator Buhari underscored the importance of adhering to global aviation standards, noting that the NCAA, empowered by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act, has a statutory duty to regulate the sector and protect consumers.
He stressed, “The NCAA must enforce its regulations, especially provisions under Part 19 of the 2023 guidelines, which outline consumer protection rights.”
He added, “Many Nigerians are unaware they are entitled to compensation for unnecessary delays. Activating this regulation will hold airlines accountable and ensure passengers get value for the services they pay for.”
The senator also highlighted the impact of poor airline services on the country’s investment climate.
“The administration’s push for economic diversification and foreign direct investment is undermined by inefficiencies in the aviation sector. This is unacceptable,” he stated.
