LThe Senate on Wednesday approved the Orthopaedic Hospital Amendment Bill 2025, a legislative move aimed at updating the existing law governing the country’s specialised health facilities for musculoskeletal care.
The bill’s passage took place during plenary, following the submission of a report by Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP-Enugu) on behalf of Senator Ipalibo Banigo, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health.
Orthopaedic hospitals cater to conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, which is essential for movement and overall physical function.
The legislation, sponsored by Senator Shehu Buba, seeks to amend the Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board Act and facilitate the establishment of a new orthopaedic hospital in Toro, Bauchi State.
Explaining the significance of the bill, Senator Banigo highlighted its potential to enhance healthcare services for individuals suffering from orthopaedic conditions such as fractures, musculoskeletal disorders, and other related ailments that currently lack sufficient medical attention.
This approval comes just a month after the bill was passed for a third reading, marking a significant step in expanding specialised healthcare services in Nigeria.
