As Nigeria prepares to mark International Women’s Day, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has weighed in on the controversy surrounding sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
She emphasized that the Senate must uphold decorum and integrity in addressing the claims brought forward by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.
Speaking to journalists, Tinubu expressed confidence that the legislative body is handling the matter appropriately. “I believe the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is,” she stated.
The allegations emerged after a heated exchange between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio on February 20 over changes in seating arrangements within the Senate chamber.
The Kogi lawmaker later claimed that her difficulties in the Senate began after she rejected advances from Akpabio.
She formally submitted a sexual harassment petition, but the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges declined to hear it, citing procedural breaches.
Tinubu, who previously served in the Senate for 12 years, stressed the importance of maintaining the dignity of the chamber. “We shouldn’t be hearing things like that. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honor to be in that place,” she said.
Encouraging women to assert themselves in leadership roles, Tinubu urged female lawmakers and professionals not to tolerate inappropriate behavior. “Women, raise yourself. Don’t be in a position where men will be talking to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start,” she advised.
The First Lady also acknowledged the strides women have made in leadership, citing figures like Zuriel Oduwole, a young advocate for peace. She encouraged Nigerian women and youth to remain confident and strive for excellence. “Keep your heads high and do your best,” she concluded.
