The State Security Service and police in Abuja employed live ammunition and tear gas to disperse both protesters and journalists reporting on the ongoing demonstrations.
In Abuja, as in other parts of Nigeria, police frequently disrupt peaceful protests with tear gas and live ammunition.
According to Premium Times, masked SSS operatives, clad in black uniforms and arriving in multiple Toyota Sienna vans, began shooting live rounds at the peaceful protesters at MKO Abiola Stadium.
This escalation followed an earlier incident where heavily armed police officers at the stadium’s main entrance had discharged tear gas at the crowd.
Several demonstrators faced harassment and arrest.
At approximately 12:15 p.m., an SSS official in a black mask approached journalists covering the protest, firing his rifle.
The bullets shattered the windscreen of one Sienna vehicle, and three bullets penetrated the trunk of the car transporting PREMIUM TIMES reporters assigned to cover the event.
