The House of Representatives has confirmed Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff following his screening by the Joint Committees on Defence and Army.
The confirmation took place during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, after the Chairman of the Defence and Army Committees, Babajimi Benson, presented the screening report.
While presenting the report, Benson, who represents the Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State, highlighted the committee’s observations.
“We reviewed his curriculum vitae and engaged him on key issues such as inter-agency synergy and civilian-military relationships. General Oluyede demonstrated exceptional competence and provided a comprehensive account of his qualifications and experience,” Benson said.
The report emphasized that Oluyede displayed extensive strategic and tactical knowledge during his tenure as acting Chief of Army Staff.
It also noted his commitment to addressing challenges such as terrorism, insurgency, and banditry, as well as improving the welfare of soldiers and upgrading the military’s security architecture.
Deputy Speaker Kalu endorsed the committee’s recommendation, stating, “The nominee showed exceptional understanding of strategies and tactics, alongside a solid track record in war and negotiations. The committee concluded that he is highly qualified for this role.”
Kalu then sought approval from the lawmakers, asking, “Carried?” The members unanimously affirmed their support.
The screening report revealed that Oluyede drew upon his vast military experience, including serving in war zones with challenges similar to those in Nigeria. He assured the committee of his readiness to apply these insights to improve the nation’s security.
“The nominee pledged to focus on critical areas such as funding, internal security, recruitment, media relations, and accountability in public resource management,” the report stated.
Oluyede, who was initially appointed as acting Chief of Army Staff earlier in November 2024 following the death of General Taoreed Lagbaja, now becomes Nigeria’s 24th Chief of Army Staff.
