An iconic Nigerian writer, broadcaster, diplomat, and former tennis champion, Mabel Segun, has died at the age of 95.
Her family confirmed her passing in a statement released late Thursday, revealing that she breathed her last in the early hours of the same day.
The statement expressed deep appreciation for her impactful life and contributions to literature, broadcasting, and sports.
It also noted that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in Literature, Broadcasting and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (nee Aig-Imoukhuede),” the family statement read.
Segun’s legacy is marked by her groundbreaking achievements and immense contributions to Nigerian society.
Born on February 18, 1930, she was a trailblazer who broke barriers across multiple fields. She pursued higher education at the University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where she graduated in 1953 with a degree in English Literature, Latin, and History.
This accomplishment set the stage for an illustrious career that spanned academics, administration, and creative writing, leaving a lasting impact both in Nigeria and beyond.
