PSV cruised to a 2-0 victory over Feyenoord on Wednesday, securing a spot in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup.
Goals from Johan Bakayoko and Guus Til were enough for Peter Bosz’s men to advance in what turned out to be a match lacking in overall quality.
Feyenoord welcomed Quinten Timber back to the starting lineup for the first time in months. The midfielder, who recently scored after coming off the bench in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Ajax, was fit enough to start.
Meanwhile, PSV had to improvise defensively, deploying Jerdy Schouten at center back following an injury to Olivier Boscagli.
PSV made an early breakthrough just seven minutes in. Bakayoko combined with Luuk de Jong before his initial shot was blocked.
The Belgian winger seized the second chance, calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner. There was some controversy surrounding the goal, with Ismail Saibari positioned in front of goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther in what looked like an offside position, but the goal stood.
Both sides struggled to produce moments of real quality in the first half, with the uneven pitch at Philips Stadium doing little to help matters.
PSV had a chance to double their lead before the break when Ivan Perisic delivered a pinpoint cross to De Jong, but the striker’s header sailed over the bar.
Perisic continued to torment Feyenoord’s defense after the restart. His crosses created several dangerous moments, including a header from De Jong that was barely kept out by Wellenreuther.
Minutes later, another Perisic cross found Guus Til, whose header was pushed onto the crossbar by the busy Feyenoord goalkeeper.
Feyenoord’s best chance came in the 55th minute when Igor Paixao slipped a pass through for Antoni Milambo in the box, but his effort was tame and easily gathered by Joel Drommel.
PSV put the game beyond doubt in the 68th minute. Saibari broke free and picked out Til, who had drifted away from his marker David Hancko to tap in against his former club.
Feyenoord never really mounted a serious threat in the closing stages. Gijs Smal’s cross late in the game found substitute Julian Carranza, but his header was comfortably saved by Drommel.
With this victory, PSV joined Heracles Almelo in the semi-final draw, with their next opponent set to be revealed on Friday.
