The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, has urged the “Take It Back” movement to reconsider their planned protest scheduled for October 1, asking for more time to allow the government to address Nigeria’s economic issues.
According to The PUNCH, Onuoha made this appeal during a meeting on Saturday with the leadership of the group at the police command headquarters in Lokoja.
The gathering followed a letter sent by the movement to the police on September 27, notifying them of the protest plans.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, said, “The Commissioner of Police advised the group to reconsider their planned protest and give the government more time to fix the economy of our dear nation.”
While acknowledging the group’s constitutional right to peaceful protest, the commissioner emphasized the potential risks.
“To prevent disgruntled elements or hoodlums from hijacking the protest and causing harm to citizens, property, and critical infrastructure, it would be wise to reconsider,” Onuoha said.
In response, the leader of the movement expressed gratitude for the dialogue, assuring the police that the group is committed to peace and development in Kogi State.
He added that the executive members would meet to deliberate on the issues raised and make a decision regarding their participation in the protest.
The group commended the Commissioner of Police for the constructive engagement, noting that it had provided valuable insights into their roles as responsible citizens and future leaders.
