The Ogun State Police Command has successfully rescued seven individuals believed to be victims of a human trafficking syndicate in the Oja-Odan area of Yewa North Local Government Area.
The police operation took place on Monday, February 12, 2025, when officers intercepted a white Volkswagen bus suspected of transporting the victims along the Oja-Odan/Ohunbe Road.
The vehicle, which was registered under the Government of Anambra State with the number plate KRD 28 YL, was driven by one Ezeani John Paul, a resident of Ichida in Anaocha Local Government Area, Anambra State.
According to the police, the driver and several passengers on the bus have been arrested and are currently in custody for questioning.
The victims, identified as Emmanuel Anyigor (25), John Peter Ogar (18), Chidioke Basil (20), Emecheta Chimaodi (18), Osondu Marvellous (19), Ifeanyi Emmanuel Uchechukwu (18), and Anizoba Chiagozie Emmanuel (18), were allegedly being transported to the Republic of Gambia before security personnel intervened.
Ogun State Police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the rescue, stating, “When questioned, the occupants of the vehicle could not provide a satisfactory explanation about their journey, which raised suspicions of human trafficking.”
She added that further investigations into the incident are underway, and the suspects, along with the vehicle, will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for additional questioning.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, urged residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious, emphasizing that many crimes could be avoided with basic safety precautions.
“We encourage all residents to stay vigilant and take necessary steps to protect themselves from becoming easy targets for criminals,” Ogunlowo said. “It is essential to be proactive in ensuring personal security.”
