The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an investigation and search operation following the drowning of 19-year-old Oluwaferanmi Olasupo at an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke Village, Odeda, on Friday.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the teenager, who was reportedly inexperienced in swimming, had gone to the quarry site with friends when the tragic incident occurred.
According to Odutola, the victim’s grandfather, Olaseinde Sunday, alerted the police at approximately 6:39 p.m. after being informed by villagers about the drowning.
“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer immediately dispatched detectives to the scene in an attempt to rescue the victim. Unfortunately, due to poor visibility as night fell, the operation had to be postponed,” she explained.
She further stated that local divers have been contacted to assist in retrieving Olasupo’s body, and the search operation is set to continue at dawn.
Meanwhile, Olasupo’s friends, who were with him at the time of the incident, reportedly fled the scene and are currently in hiding.
“The police have directed the parents of the fleeing individuals to ensure they present them for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation,” Odutola added.
Authorities assured that further updates would be provided as the search operation progresses.
