In a recent operation led by the Nigerian police, a notorious kidnap kingpin was killed, and two abductors were arrested during a mission to rescue 20 abducted medical students.
According to The PUNCH, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, made this revelation on Sunday while officially handing over the rescued students to their respective Vice Chancellors in Abuja.
Egbetokun emphasized that the successful rescue was achieved without the payment of any ransom, countering widespread speculation that such a payout might have been involved.
He highlighted that the operation’s success was due to a well-coordinated effort involving multiple security agencies and community engagement.
“This success was made possible through the support received from the office of the NSA, the activation of the security network, intelligence, synergy with other security agencies, community engagement, and deployment of our highly skilled and tactical officers whose dedication, bravery, and precision in executing their duties are truly commendable,” Egbetokun said, acknowledging the collective effort that led to the students’ safe recovery.
The operation itself was described as a meticulously planned tactical offensive.
The IG stressed that the police operatives engaged the kidnappers in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
The leader of the kidnapping syndicate was neutralized during this confrontation, showcasing the effectiveness and precision of the police response.
“During the operation, our officers engaged the kidnappers in a well-coordinated tactical offensive. I am pleased to inform you that the kingpin of this notorious gang was neutralized during an exchange of fire with our operatives while two other members of the gang were arrested and their weapons recovered,” Egbetokun stated, emphasizing the strategic nature of the operation.
The two arrested suspects are currently in custody and are providing crucial information to the authorities. This intelligence is expected to aid in dismantling the broader criminal network responsible for the abduction and prevent future incidents.
The Inspector General expressed confidence that these developments would contribute significantly to ongoing efforts to enhance security across the country.
“These individuals are currently in our custody where they are providing valuable information that will help us dismantle their criminal network and prevent future occurrences of such abductions,” Egbetokun added, underscoring the importance of the information being gathered from the detained suspects.
The police operation has been widely praised for its efficiency and the swift recovery of the abducted students, reinforcing the commitment of Nigerian security forces to combating kidnapping and other forms of criminality.
