A police inspector, Ajele Oloyede, has reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on duty at a ceramics company in Igbesa, Ogun State.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday and was discovered by another officer, Tolorunloju Stephen, upon his return from Ikeja around 1:20 p.m.
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, Stephen found Oloyede resting his head on a table inside the security office.
When asked about his condition, the inspector reportedly assured Stephen that he was fine.
However, moments later, Stephen returned from the restroom to find Oloyede in a pool of blood.
“With the help of private security personnel, the wounded officer was immediately rushed to Ota General Hospital,” Odutola said. “Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.”
Police officers who visited the scene recovered Oloyede’s pistol, and his body has been deposited at Ota General Hospital for an autopsy.
Odutola further stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran for further investigation.
“We are in the process of notifying his family, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” she added.
