In a significant move to combat gender-based violence across Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force has announced the establishment of GBV desk offices in all divisional headquarters nationwide.
Previously available only at zonal and state commands, the expansion aims to ensure that survivors receive timely and professional support at the grassroots level.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi said the initiative was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as part of efforts to enhance access to justice for victims.
“This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, improve service delivery, and ensure easier access to justice for citizens,” Adejobi stated. “With GBV desk offices now at the divisional level, cases will receive prompt, specialized, and professional attention.”
To ensure the effective handling of GBV-related cases, the IGP has directed that trained officers be appointed as GBV desk officers in all divisions.
“These officers will undergo specialized training to equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and expertise to handle GBV cases effectively,” Adejobi added.
Beyond addressing GBV, the newly designated officers will also oversee the Juvenile, Women, and Children sections within their respective divisions.
“This integration is designed to provide a holistic approach to handling gender-based violence and related cases, fostering a supportive environment for victims and ensuring swift justice delivery,” he explained.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of survivors, emphasizing that the initiative is a proactive response to the growing need for focused resources and specialized interventions to protect vulnerable individuals.
