The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed a viral claim made on social media platform, which alleged that Commissioner of Police CP Benneth C. Igweh intended to incite violence against protesters.
In a statement released on Friday evening, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh refuted the claim.
The rumor, spread by an influencer on X, accused the FCT police commissioner of planning to target participants in the ongoing hunger protests in the FCT, accompanied by a photo of police equipment purportedly for this purpose.
The police clarified that the equipment shown was standard anti-riot gear.
The statement read, “The FCT police command is aware of a publication on X (Twitter) by one Harry, ‘@chiditweets042,’ alleging that the Commissioner of Police, FCT, is planning to unleash mayhem in FCT and supporting the same with a picture of the police equipment meant for deployment.
“Consequent on the above, the command wishes to debunk the allegation, labelling it as false, mischievous, and misleading. It is important to note that the commissioner of police primary assignment is to protect lives and property, and he has been doing so in line with the extant laws.
“The commissioner of police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni while reaffirming the command’s unflinching commitment to ensuring the safety of all, urges residents to disregard the information and go about their lawful businesses without fear, noting that the intention of the peddler of the publication is to mislead and cause apprehension in the populace.”
