The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended Khadija Ali for allegedly abandoning her one-day-old baby along a bush path in Mpape.
The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh disclosed in a statement on Sunday that officers responded to a distress call at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they discovered the infant wrapped in cloth and abandoned in the bush.
“The baby was promptly rescued and transported to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where medical personnel confirmed the child is in stable condition,” Adeh stated.
During interrogation, Ali reportedly admitted to abandoning the newborn, citing her inability to care for the child due to being deserted by her husband.
“The rescued baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother will face prosecution under Sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act 2003 after investigations are concluded,” Adeh added.
The police spokesperson called on residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity, reiterating the command’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
“The welfare and protection of vulnerable members of society remain a top priority for the FCT Police Command,” Adeh emphasized.
