Ondo State Police Command has apprehended three individuals suspected of attacking members of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area.
The students were reportedly assaulted on Sunday, February 23, while traveling to Abuja for their annual convention.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, stated on Tuesday in Akure that the command acted swiftly upon receiving a distress call from one of the victims.
“We received a report from a NANS member about an unprovoked attack by some youths in the Ogbese area. Our officers immediately responded, restored calm, and ensured the safety of the victims,” Odunlami said.
She further revealed that intelligence reports indicated similar incidents had occurred in the past, prompting the police to intensify efforts in tracking down those responsible.
“Through intelligence-led policing, our special squad successfully apprehended three suspects linked to the attack,” she added.
The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, assured NANS members of a thorough investigation to uncover the motive behind the incident and ensure justice.
“The command remains committed to safeguarding all residents and travelers passing through Ondo State,” Afolabi stated.
According to Odunlami, the arrested individuals are currently being interrogated and will face legal action upon the conclusion of investigations.
“We urge the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency,” she emphasized.
Meanwhile, the South-West Zonal Coordinator of NANS, Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, expressed appreciation to the police for their swift response and commitment to security.
“NANS is grateful for the prompt intervention of the police. We pledge our support in working with security agencies to combat crime in Ondo State,” Taiwo stated.
